RINKU wa GANON to no kibishii sentou no sue, TORAIFO-SU o torimodoshi, ZERUDA hime o sukuidashimashita. | At the end of an intense battle, Link finally defeated Ganon, took back the Triforce and rescued princess Zelda. | At the end of a fierce fight, Link overthrew Ganon, took back the Triforce and rescued Princess Zelda. |

| HAIRARU wa kouhai no itto o tadoru ippou deshita. | Hyrule had followed a one-way road to ruin. | Hyrule was on the road to ruin.
| GANON no jyaakuna kokoro no chikara nokoshita ga, HAIRARU no chitsujyo o sukkari midashiteita no desu. | It was the power left behind by the wicked heart of Ganon, that was thoroughly corrupting the order in Hyrule. | The power that the vile heart of Ganon had left behind was causing chaos and disorder in Hyrule.
| sono ue, GANON ga taosareta ato mo, sono ichibu no teshitatachi ha HAIRARU no nokori, GANON fukkatsu no kikai o ukagatte imashita. | More importantly, even after the fall of Ganon, his underlings remained in Hyrule, waiting for a chance to revive Ganon. | What's more, even after the fall of Ganon, some of his underlings remained, waiting for Ganon's return. | The underlings are not merely waiting, they seem to be ready to act to revive Ganon, if a good opportunity appears. |
| fukkatsu no kagi, sore wa GANON o taoshita mono - RINKU no chi deshita. | The key to this was the blood of the person who had defeated Ganon - Link. | The key to Ganon's return was the blood of Link - the valiant lad that overthrew the King of Evil. |
Note the difference between return and revive And Ganon isn't called the "King of Evil" in the original. |

| Meanwhile, Link remained in this little kingdom, and lent his power to the reconstruction of Hyrule. However, the situation was not good. | Meanwhile, Link remained in the little kingdom of Hyrule and lent his hand to its restoration. But the situation did not look very good.
| sonna aru hi, 16 sai no tanjyoubi o mukaeta RINKU no hidarite no kou ni, fushigina aza ga ukidetekitano desu. sona aza wa, marude oukoku no monshou no you deshita. | One day, nearing Link's 16th birthday, a mysterious birthmark surfaced on the back of his left hand. This birthmark was quite like the crest of the kingdom. | One day a strange mark, exactly like the crest of the kingdom, appeared on the back of Link's hand as he approached his 16th birthday. | The birthmark is mysterious (fushigi), not just strange. This is the same word used in the titles of the Oracle games (Fushigi no Ki no Mi = Fruit of the Mysterious Tree). |
| Worried, Link departed for princess Zeldas's nursing mother, Impa. | The worried Link, went to Impa, Princess Zelda's nursemaid who was shocked and frightened when she saw the birthmark.
| aza o mita INPA wa, odoroki, awatefutamekimashita ga, reisei sa o torimodosuto, RINKU o kita no shiro ni tsurete kimashita. | When Impa looked upon the birth mark, she was shocked, and burst into a panic, but after she regained her composure, she led Link to the North Castle. | When she regained her composure, she took Link to the North Castle.
| kita no shiro niha, akazu no tobira toiu mono ga ari, sono akekata o shitte iru no wa, daitai ouke ni tsukaeru INPA no kakei o tsugu mono dake deshita. | In the North Castle, there was a door called "the door that does not open." Only members of Impa's lineage, whose family has served the royal family generation after generation, knew the way to open it. | There was a door in the North Castle called "the door that does not open." Only the descendants of the Impa family who served the king knew how to open the door. | Impa's family has served the royal family, not just the king. |
| INPA wa RINKU no hidarite o toruto, sono tobira ni te no kou o oshiatemashita. | Impa took Link's left hand, and pushed the hand's backside against the door. | Impa took Link's left hand and pressed the back of it against the door.
| suruto dou deshou. jyoumae no hazureru oto ga shite, tobira ga kishi minagara yukkuri to aite iku dewa arimasen ka. | Then what should happen? There was the sound of a lock disconnecting, and while creaking, the door slowly opened. | There was a sound of a lock falling open, the door slowly creaked open and there on an altar in the middle of the room lay a beautiful woman.
| soshite, sono heya no chuuou niwa, ookina saidan ga ari, soko niwa utsukushii josei ga yokotawatte ita no desu. | In the middle of the room, there was a big altar. A beautiful woman was laying on it. | There was a sound of a lock falling open, the door slowly creaked open and there on an altar in the middle of the room lay a beautiful woman.
「あのおかたが、初代ゼルダ姫じゃよ」 | 「ano okata ga, shodai ZERUDA hime jya yo」 | "That person is the first generation princess Zelda." | "Here lies the Princess Zelda." | "Shodai" means "first generation" or "founder."
Presumably, Zelda here is the "first" because all other Zeldas were
named after her (she founded the naming tradition). It's not clear whether this
means that she predates all other known Zeldas. If anybody was named Zelda before
her, maybe it was just a coincidence. |

| 「RINKU, omae ni HAIRARU ni tsutawaru 『ZERUDA no densetsu』o kataranebanaranai toki ga kita you jya. | "Link, it seems that the time has come when I must tell you the legend of Zelda handed down in Hyrule. | "Link, the time has come when I must tell you the legend of Zelda handed down in Hyrule.
| mukashi, mada HAIRARU ga hitotsu no kuni datta koro, idai naru ou ga TORAIFO-SU o tsukatte, HAIRARU no chitsujyo o tamotte otta sou jya. | Long ago, when Hyrule was still one country, a great King was said to have used the Triforce to maintain order in Hyrule. | It is said that long ago, when Hyrule was one country, a great ruler maintained the peace in Hyrule using the Triforce.
| shikashi ou mo mata hitonoko, jyumyou tsukite nakunarareta. | Yet, even the king was a son of man, and passed away when his lifespan was exhausted. | However, the king too was a child of man and he died. | The Japanese text gives more honor to the King. It does not just say that he "dies." "Son of Man" (Hito no Ko) is also a title given to Christ. But in this context, I believe this is just saying the king is human, and thus not immortal. |
| soshite, kono kuni no ouji ga tsugi no kokuou to nari, sono subete o uketsugu hazu datta no jya ga, TORAIFO-SU dake wa fukanzen ni shika uketsugu koto ga dekinakata no jya. | Then, the prince of the Kingdom became the next king, and was to inherit everything. However, when it came to the Triforce, he was only able to inherit it incompletely. | Then, the prince of the kingdom should have become king and inherited everything, but he could inherit the Triforce only in part.
| ouji wa sono tarinai mono o motomete, ari to arayuru tokoro o sagashita ga, nakanaka mitsukara nakatta. | The prince sought for what he did not have, and searched everywhere, but he couldn't seem to find it. | The Prince searched everywhere for the missing parts, but could not find them. | Important difference. The Japanese version doesn't say how many parts the prince is missing, only that he searched for what he did not have. The English version says the prince is searching for the missing "parts." This implies (though not necessarily) that he only has one part in his possession, since the Triforce has three parts. |
| sonna toki, ou no sokkin no majyutsushi ga omowanu shirase o motte kita no jya. | Then, a magician, one of the King's aids, came with some unexpected news. | Then, a magician close to the king brought him some unexpected news.
| majyutsushi wa, douyara ou wa shinu mae ni, kono ouji no imotou no shodai ZERUDA hime dake ni TORAIFO-SU ni tsuite no nanika shabetta to iu no jya. | The magician had heard something about the King telling only the Prince's younger sister, the first generation Princess Zelda, about the Triforce before he died. | Before he died, the king had said something about the Triforce to only the younger sister of the prince, Princess Zelda.
| sassoku ouji wa ZERUDA hime o toitsumeta no jya ga, hime wa kesshite kuchi o warou towa shinakatta. | Without delay, the prince questioned princess Zelda. However, the princess was determined not to say anything. | The prince immediately questioned the princess, but she wouldn't tell him anything.
| ikkou ni kikidasu koto no dekinai ouji ni kawari, kondo wa majyutsushi ga, shaberanai no nara eien ni nemuri tsuzukeru mahou o kakeru to odo shita ga, sore demo hime wa, shaberou towa shinakatta jya. | The prince was not able to get any information, so the magician tried. He threatened the princess with a magic that would cause her to sleep forever, if she did not talk. Even then, the Princess did not speak. | After the prince, the magician threatened to put the princess into an eternal sleep if she did not talk, but even still, she said nothing.
| gou o niyashita wa, hontou ni mahou o kakeyou toshi, odoroita ouji wa, jyumon o tonaeru no o yamesaseyou toshita ga, mjyutsushi wa ouji o hajikitobashi, sara ni jyumon o tonaetsuzuke, soushite toutou jyumon o zenbu tonaeoete shimatta no jya. | In his anger, the magician tried to cast a spell on the princess. The surprised prince tried to stop him, but the magician fought off the prince and went on chanting the spell. | In his anger, the magician tried to cast a spell on the princess. The surprised prince tried to stop him, but the magician fought off the prince and went on chanting the spell.
| Princess Zelda fell on that spot and entered a sleep from which she would never awake. | Then, when the spell was finally cast, Princess Zelda fell on that spot and entered a sleep from which she might never awake.
| to douji ni, majyutsushi mo sono ba ni taore, zetsumei shite ita sou jya. | It is said that at the same time, the magician also fell at that place, dead. | At the same time, the magician also fell down and breathed his last. | Impa only reports that "it is said" that the wizard died. So maybe it was just hearsay that he died, and maybe he didn't really die. Impa could, however, be talking this way because she is reciting the story second-hand. |
| The prince let out a great moan of lament, and placed princess Zelda in this room. | In his grief, the prince placed the princess in this room.
| itsuka kitto yomigaeru koto o negattena. | Hoping that she would surely come back to life someday. | He hoped that someday she would come back to life. | This line is designed sort of to be a continuation from the last line. |
soshite, kono higeki o nido to wasurenu you ni to, daidai ouke ni umareru onna no ko ni wa, kanarazu ZERUDA to na zukeru you ni inochi jya nasatta jya. | Then, in order to never forget this tragedy, and to keep the memory alive, coming generations of girls in the royal family were always to be named Zelda." | So that this tragedy would never be forgotten, he ordered every female child born into the royal household shall be given the name Zelda." | In the imperial family of Japan today, princes and princesses carry one name until they turn twenty, and then get a new name. Since the Japanese royal family is one line, it's only the first name that ever changes. |
INPA wa, ZERUDA hime no nemuru saidan no yoko no dai no ue yori, yahari onaji monshou no aru ippon no makimono to, muttsu no chiisana KURISUTARU o tori, RINKU ni tewatashimashita. | From a stand, next to the altar where princess Zelda lay sleeping, Impa took one scroll with the same crest (as on Link) and six small crystals and handed them over to Link. | From the stand next to the alter where Princess Zelda lay in a deep sleep, Impa took six crystals and a scroll with the same crest and handed them to Link. | Small crystals. |

| Uncertain, Link glanced over the scroll. But what should happen? | Link glanced at the scroll half in doubt, but what do you know?

| sonata ni TORAIFO-SU no himitsu o tsutae you. | You will now be told the secret(s) of the Triforce. | I shall hand down to you the secrets of the Triforce.
| TORAIFO-SU niwa, san-bai no shurui ga aru. sunawachi "chikara", "chie", soshite "yuuki". | There are three kinds of Triforce. Namely "power," "wisdom" and "courage." | There are three kinds of Triforce - Power, Wisdom, and Courage.
| kono san bai no TORAIFO-SU o awaseta toki, TORAIFO-SU wa sono saidaigen chikara o hakki suru no da. | When these three Triforce are joined together, its maximum power will be shown. | When these three are brought together, the Triforce will show its maximum power.
| san bai no uchi, "chikara" to "chie" no ni hai wa oukoku ni nokosu kara uketoru ga yoi. | Of the three, "power" and "wisdom" remain in this Kingdom and can be received. | Of the three, I have left Power and Wisdom in the kingdom. | It is clear that Power and Wisdom are "accessible" - i.e. they can simply be picked up (as opposed to being hidden away). |
| shikashi, "yuuki" no TORAIFO-SU wa riyuu atte watashi ga kakushita. | But the Triforce of "courage" I have hidden for a reason. | But the Triforce of Courage I have hidden for a reason.
| TORAIFO-SU wa daremo tsukaeru toiu wake dewanai. | Not everyone can use the Triforce. | Not everybody can use the Triforce.
| It is necessary to have a heart free of evil, and a strong character. However, it is also necessary to have special innate qualities. | It requires a strong character with no evil thoughts. But an inborn special quality is also necessary. | Qualities probably plural. Umarenagara means carry from birth, like a "born" poet. The innate quality needed might be the fate of being a chosen hero of the gods, as Link is in most other games. |
| zannen nagara watashi no ikite iru ma ni, sona youna jinbutsu o mitsukeru koto wa dekinakatta. | Unfortunately, during my lifetime, I was not able to find such a person. | Unfortunately, I have not found such a person during my lifetime.
| Thus, I cast a magical spell on all of Hyrule. | Therefore, I have decided to cast a spell on all of Hyrule. | The word "mahou" means magic, and is used instead of the word for spell. Both words mean basically the same thing; it's just a matter of the context. The word for spell is more specifically the words or writing of it. So in that sense, in Japanese you can cast or incant a spell, but you can't put a spell on someone or something. The kanji for "spell" is composed of the kanji for "curse" and "letter." |
| soshitsu o motta ningen ga michi o ayamarazu ni sodachi, samazamana keiken o tsumi, aru nenrei ni tachi shita toki, monshou ga arawareru you nina. | A crest will appear on a person with those qualities who has been raised correctly, picked up various experiences, and is of a certain age. | A crest will appear on a young man with that character who has been brought up correctly, has gained many kinds of experiences and reached a certain age.
| shikashi, moshi sore made ni, hoka no dareka ga TORAIFO-SU o tsukaeba dou naru darou ka? | However, if another person uses the Triforce before that, what will happen? | But, what will happen if someone else uses the Triforce before then?
| tsukai kata o ayamareba, samazamama aku o umidasu. | If it is misused, it will produce various evils. | If it is misused, it will produce many evils.
| The Triforce of "courage" is hidden in the Great Temple at the "Valley of Death" on the biggest island in Hyrule. | The Triforce of Courage is hidden in the Great Palace in the Valley of Death on the largest island in Hyrule. | No palace. "Shinden" means Temple or Sacred Place. This is the same kanji used in OoT for such places as the Temple of Time and the Forest Temple. Note that here the Valley of Death is given in kanji, while a few sentences down the katakana equivalent is given as well (DESU BAREE - Death Valley). |
| But, to get there, you must first fight the guardian deities in the six temples in Hyrule to break the "barrier." | However, to enter you must first fight the guardians and undo the 'binding force.' | "Shugoshin" is the same word used to describe "guardian deities" in such games as MM. (Remember when the owl says the swamp has lost its guardian deity?) So, in a way, the bosses are like guardian deities of their temples. "Kekkai" is used in OoT in Ganon's castle. There it is translated "barrier." |
| korera no shugoshin wa, watashi ga shinden ni gaiteki ga shinnyuu suru no o fusegu tame ni tsukutta mono da. | I have made these guardian deities in order to protect the temples from trespassing by foreign enemies. | When you have defeated the guardians, which I made to prevent enemies from invading the six palaces in Hyrule, set a crystal in the forehead of the statue you find. | The King built the deities (perhaps using the power of the Triforce), although organized may be more likely. |
| soshite shugoshin o taoshitara, sono oku no sekizou ni KURISUTARU o hame owatta toki, "shi no tani (DESU BAREE)" ni harareta "kekkai" wa toke, daishinden ni hairu koto ga dekiru you ni naru. | When you have defeated the gurdian deities, and placed the crystals in the statues deep inside the temples, the barrier placed on "Death Valley" will be broken, and you will be able to enter the Great Temple. | When you have set crystals in all of the statues in the six palaces, the 'binding force' placed on the Valley of Death will be removed and you will be able to enter the great palace. | Does not say anything about foreheads. |
| You can get your hands on the Triforce once you defeat that guardian deity [in the Great Temple]. | There, you must fight the last guardian. And you can obtain the Triforce only by defeating that guardian.
| osoreru koto nakare, sonata nara kitto TORAIFO-SU o eru koto ga dekiyou. | There's nothing to fear. I'm sure that you will be able to gain the Triforce. | There's nothing to fear. You are the one to get the Triforce.
| soshite HAIRARU no kibou no hikari to naru koto o negau. | I pray that you will then become the light of hope for Hyrule." | You are the beacon of hope for Hyrule."
| makimon o yomiowari, yukkuri to kao o ageru RINKU ni INPA wa tangan shita. | Impa implored Link, who raised his head slowly after reading the scroll. | Impa implored Link, who raised his head slowly after reading the scroll.
| shodai ZERUDA hime ni kakerareta mahou mo, TORAIFO-SU o tsukaeba kitto tokeru hazu jya. | If the Triforce is used, the magic that was put on the founding princess Zelda will surely be disspelled. | The magic spell cast upon the Princess Zelda will sure to be broken if the Triforce is used.
| RINKU, onegai jya. | Link, I beg you. | Please, Link.
| TORAIFO-SU o kanzenna mono noni shi, hime o sukutte okure. | Make the Triforce complete and thus save the princess. | Unite the Triforce and save the princess.
| soshite, heiwana HAIRARU o torimodoshite okure. | And, bring back the peaceful Hyrule. | And bring back peace to Hyrule.
| Link bowed silently his head in assent, and glanced in the direction of the altar. Then he left the room. | Link nodded silently in approval, and left the room after taking a long glance at the altar.
| hidari te ni MAJIKARUSO-DO, migi te niwa MAJIKARUSHI-RUDO o motte. | Carrying with his left hand a Magical Sword, and with his right hand a Magical Shield. | Then with a magical sword in his left hand and a magical shield in his right, he set off alone on his long travels. | Says nothing about Link travelling alone, but of course he is. Could be the Magical Sword, or a magical sword. Probably "a." |
| ippou sono koro, GANON no teshitatachi wa makai yori aratatana chuugen o yobiyose, GANON fukkatsu ni mukete hataraki hajime you to shite ita no desu... | Meanwhile, Ganon's underlings were calling up fresh footmen from the World of Spirits (Hell), and had begun working for Ganon's revival... | At that time, Ganon's underlings were calling up new allies from the Underworld, and were beginning to work devilishly towards the revival of Ganon | Chuugen means Samurai's attendant/footman (ie ordinary solidiers, ie cannon fodder). It is not "allies." "Makai" means the World of Spirits (Hell). Makai is also used in OoT when Zelda and Rauru explain what will happen to the Sacred Realm if it is corrupted - it will become a "world of evil," a world "filled with evil." Note that Makai is NOT the Underworld from LoZ. In LoZ, the Underworld is referred to as 地下 - "Chika," underground. So the underworld in LoZ is literally underground. |
