The request of the Flute-boy
Now that Link has obtained the Magic Hammer from the Palace of Darkness he can pound the little pegs to the southwest of the Palace entrance.
From this moment on you can freely explore most of Dark Hyrule (with a few exceptions which require you to lift dark green rocks). First the obligatory tasks are covered and then I'll mention all the optional stuff in the "Missing Links" section as usual.
Your first task is to retrieve the Flute which is held by the unnamed flute playing boy in the center of the clearing to the east of Kakariko. Visit him here in the Dark World and he requests you to find his hidden flute.
He says that his flute is hidden somewhere in the clearing and gives you a Shovel so you can dig it up for him in the Light World. Use your Mirror to return and start digging. The shovel is always hiddden in the NW corner as shown on the picture below:
Take it back to the Dark World by reentering the image left by the Mirror and talk to the fox-like creature. He then explains that it is of no use to him anymore as he can't play the flute in his current form and relinquishes it to you. He does request you to play it for him once more. After doing so the boy turns into a sapling and finds some peace.
The secret of Kakariko's Weather vane
Now that you have the flute what would its purpose be? If you talked to the old man in Kakariko's Tavern (where you found the 2nd bottle) you know that this man is his father so return to him in the Light World. You'll notice that he's sleeping now...
Approach again and play the flute. The old guy wakes up and asks you about his son. Alas, the sad look in Link's eyes tells him all he needs to know. The father then makes a final request to Link. He should play the flute in front of the bird in Kakariko Village. That's what his son wanted him to do.
Go outside and search for any birds, but there are none. Well, except for this inanimate one in the town's center. Play the song of the flute for this metal bird and something happens! The exterior of the bird shatters reveal a real-live one inside.
The bird flies off, but anytime you play the flute on the overworld the bird comes by and picks you up. Then you are allowed to travel to 7 different locations on the map (or return to your old position by pressing 'Y').
Use this in your advantage to travel to all distant corner of Hyrule, but note that this bird lives in the Light world and therefore he cannot help you on the Dark side.
Path to the next dungeon
A Link to the Past is known for its non-linearity when it comes to dungeon designs so currently you can visit the dungeons for Crystals 2,3 and 4 right now. But after clearing dungeon 4 you can find the a way to lift the dark green rocks and then all 7 dungeons become available (minus the two you cleared that is)!
However some of them require you to find items from the previous dungeons, so you may get stuck if you go out for Level 7 straight away. You're free to pick your own route, but I'm going to stick with the number and so Crystal #2 at the Watergate is the first destination on my list. Once you get there you notice that you cannot enter it as the ladder is too short!
The hint tile suggests that the Dark and Light worlds are connected somehow, hence you should go outside again and warp to the Light world. Enter the Watergate here and pull the right lever at the end to open the gate. Go outside again and warp back to the Dark world.
Enter the building to begin your quest for the second maiden.

The Water Gate area
Some interesting stuff is going on here, check it out:
The cave of 380 Rupees
In the NE corner of this area there is a bombable wall, so take out a bomb and place it at the same location as the Faerie Pond was hidden in the Light World.Inside there's a strange creature how gives you 300 Rupees as a gift for visiting him. Furthermore bomb the back wall to find 4 chests each with a Red Rupee inside!

Village of the Outcasts
In the dark world's village and the regions nearby the following stuff can be completed right now.
|
|
|
300 Rupee Stash
Bomb the small shack to the south of the Village of the Outcasts and find a chest with 300 Rupees inside it.
|
The shooting gallery
Go inside the little cabin to the south of the Village of the Outcasts to find a strange gallery with moving hands and targets. Talk to the operator and play this mini-game for 20 Rupees. Each time you hit a target you win an amount of Rupees which doubles with each consecutive hit. Hence you can win: 2 + 4 + 8 + 16 + 32 + 64 = 126 Rupees if all 6 arrows hit their targets. That's all, no Pieces of Heart to be won here. The Dark Cemetery
From the Village of the Outcasts head NE to find a the Dark world's interpretation of a cemetery and sanctuary.Hint on the Pyramid's crack
Head to the north were the Santuary would be in teh light world and enter the cave. Inside there's a target who will tell you a story for 20 Rupees. Give him his money and he speaks about a Great Faerie being locked up in the Pyramid of Power, the only way to reach her is by bombing the crack outside in the wall. But he also says that normal bombs are not strong enough to break it...

The talking trees
In the Dark world you might have noticed that some trees look at you and even follow your movement with their eyes...If you touch their snout a bomb comes out.But after that you can safely approach it and also communicate with it. Some of the trees have interesting tales to tell you whereas others only tell you not to dash around everywhere. Trees which have a story to tell always start with:
Anyway. Click on each of the thumbnails to see each tree and the attached story to it. Some of them are rubbish whereas the last one is very interesting. How does the tree know those things about Ganon?
