Guide the Old man of the mountain
With two pendants down the last remaining one can be found at the top of Death Mountain, but before continuing on you may want to complete some of the optional side-quests. These include increasing your Bomb/Arrow stock and gaining the
Zora Flippers. Check the "Missing Links" at the bottom to find the guide to finding these.
Once you're fully equipped (or not) head to lumberjacks to the north of Kakariko. There's a small warning sign in near the entrance to the mountain and a large green rock (which Link can lift ever since he got the Power Gloves).
Inside it's a one-way direction only so after falling down there's no way back. Follow the lower right path and there is an old man blocking the path to the next room. He asks you if he can trail along with you, because he lost his lamp. And so he joins your party.
Along the path he gives you hints where to go next so follow these directions. During your trip he tells you a lot things a normal ordinary man wouldn't know about. Once outside again take care not to get hit by the falling rocks and don't get hit by the brown walking rocks (supposedly called Deadrocks). They'll turn to purple stones momentarily if you hit them. At the end of the old man's voyage he gives him a magic mirror to gaze in.
If you enter his home the old man tells you that you need to find the
Moon Pearl before the mirror has any real use to you (besides you can't use it now anyway). He can also heal your weariness by regenerating all your hearts, so go here if you received a lot of damage. In the back of his room there is a passageway to the east. It's not that interesting as it leads back outside to Death Mountain 1 screen to the right.
Take the path to the north west, because the east is a dead end as the bridge is out of comission. If you wish to return to Kakariko village go into the cave near the signpost. Otherwise go up the staircase and to the right to find "Spectacle Rock".
You can enter the rock here, but there's no point in doing so. Instead you fall down the gap just left of big rock as seen on the picture above.Make sure to fall at the rightmost square as you'll miss the ledge otherwise!
Faerie Pond (7/14) The pond in Spectacle rock |
Fall down the single space gap on the left side of the ledge near Spectacle rock and enter the hole to find a diagonal corridor with Mini-Moldorms and a small pond at the end.
|
|
Inside the ledge head north and ascend the stairs to 2F, and you come across a telepathic tile and a Piece of Heart. Read the ti... Oh wait, I have mention the Piece of Heart separately here.
Piece of Heart (10/24) lame... |
Just enter Spectacle rock from the ledge outside and follow the path.
|
|
As I was saying: Read the tile to find out that Link must somehow climb Death Mountain in order to reach the Tower of Hera. Unfortunately, there is no path up so scaling the mountain won't be possible...
Enter the Dark World
Instead go right from Spectacle rock to see a very peculiar shaped square pool. Stand on it to be warped into another world.
This is very strange. Everything (including Link the adorable bunny) has gone dark and twisted. You cannot use a sword, shield or any other item in this shape so the only thing to do now is walking around. Walk to the left to find a small ball and a bully. Talk to the ball to find out what is going on around here.
He tells you that the Golden Power changes everything depending on what is in your heart. Link is a pure young lad and therefore he was changed into a cute bunny apparently. The bully however became a vile monster since he was no good at all. Talking to the bully reveals that you need the
Moon Pearl in order to keep you own shape in this world. And speaking of the Moon Pearl, there is bound to be one inside the Tower of Hera!
Also notice that the ledge reachable just below the teleporter which brought you here
is useless as you cannot yet progress through the cave which is inside the hole.
Faerie Pond (8/14) A dark pond |
In the most south western part of Death Mountain on the dark side there is Faerie Pond. Regardless of your shape the big Faerie will heal your wounds.
|
|
Do recall the the old man gave you the mirror, which is your way out of this dump. Stand inside of the outline which seems to have the same shape as Spectacle rock. Now use the Magic Mirror and you can warp back to the light world again.
Once you're back you notice that you are now on top of Spectacle Rock. Hehey, another easy-to-grab Piece of Heart is in the vicinity.
Piece of Heart (11/24) also lame... |
After warping back from the Dark world you can't really miss this piece, now can you?
|
|
Jump down the northern ledge and go to the right. Here's the Tower of Hera at last! You can also visit the Stone Tablet to the left, but after reading its text with the Book of Mudora you'll quickly come to the conclusion that you need the
Master Sword before you can claim
Ether. The path to the right is a dead end so we can't go that way for now.
Missing Links
Desert of Mystery
With the Power Gloves you can now lift those green rocks without too much effort so take out the the large rock in the bottom left corner on the screen with the middle aged man. Underneath it is a stairway to the thief who hints you about the Pond of Happiness in Lake Hylia. Furthermore each of the jars contains a Blue Rupee.
Zora Flippers Ability to swim for a mere 500 Rupees |
Before getting the Flippers you need at least 500 Rupees so make sure to get this amount. You can plunder the aforementioned cave which has 9 Blue Rupees indefinitely so money shouldn't be a concern.
Go to the Potion Hag's shop and lift the big rock to the far right. Take note that the smaller, but darker rock near Link is much heavier and cannot yet be lifted.
Follow the path behind it to end up near Zora's Waterfall. Here you must travel through the undeep (light blue) water or else Link will drown causing him to lose a heart. Navigate through the entire section (follow the bottom route to the right) and avoid all the Zoras and their fire balls to end up at a large waterfall.
When you ask him about the flippers you need to pay up 500 Rupees for one pair, oblige to this offer. You do not only get the Zora Flippers, but you're also allowed to travel through the whirlpools which allow the Zora to travel through the waters of Hyrule. You can use these as warps so to say.
|
|
Piece of Heart 9/24 An alcove at Zora's waterfall |
Just after you get the flippers do not leave the waterfall right away. Instead swim down the left side of the waterfall to the south of King Zora and you'll end up on a small patch of grass as shown below.
|
|
Waterfall of Wishing Upgrade your shield and Boomerang |
Back outside Zora's Domain there is a small waterfall to the left. Swim into the current to find a secret cavern behind the flow of water. Inside you can throw an item into the pond. If you do so a Great Faerie will appear and she asks whether you threw it in. Telling the truth or lying doesn't make a change she always gives the item back.
However, if you throw in your Level 1 Shield, or the Boomerang or an Empty Bottle and you tell the truth they receive an upgrade! Behold:
Red Shield
Blocks all projectiles including Zora's fire balls, but cannot block laser beams.
Magical Boomerang
You can throw it faster and farther then the previous one
Magic Potion
Why spend 60 Rupees at the Hag's shop if you can get it here for free?
|
|
Empty Bottle 3/4 Explorations under the bridge |
To the south of the Octorock field there is a stone bridge. Follow the path to the east along the bottom edge. At the dead end you can jump (or climb) into the water. Then swim all the way back to the bridge and go underneath the arc.
Here's a sleeping guy who will give you another empty bottle for your efforts.

Cemetery
Ever wondered how to get back into the basement of Hyrule Castle in order to claim the 300 Rupee prize I mentioned during the prologue? Well here's how. In the cemetery push the top left grave upwards to reveal a gap beneath it. Link falls down automatically so you need to go there anyway.
At the bottom you find yourself back in the Hidden Passage part just before the movable block. Now bomb (or dash) the weakened sections in the left wall to find your treasure. 4 Hearts, 3 Bombs, 10 Arrows and 300 Rupees, how swell.
Lake Hylia
Pond of Happiness Stock upgrades for a total of 1,400 Rupees |
Travel to Lake Hylia using either the Zora whirlpool near the Waterfall of Wishing or by just walking there and enter the large lake to find a small island in the center with two Buzzbombs and a dark green rock.
Inside there is a long corridor and a pond at the top. When you approach it you can throw in some Rupees to determine your 'happiness'. The meaning of the reading is beyond me, but every time you hit 100 Rupees a Great Faerie appears and she will allow you to upgrade either you bombs or arrows maximum capacity by 5.
At first you can only throw in 5 or 20 Rupees, but after the Great Faerie appears for the first time you throw 25 or 50 Rupees at a time which goes much quicker! The maximum capacity is 50 Bombs and 70 Arrows. Furthermore the last upgrade is gives increases the stock by 10 instead of 5, hence you need 1,400 Rupees to get them all, if you really want to.
Since you won't be needing any Rupees until you need the Super Bomb near the end you can spend all your money here. Check out the other missing links to find locations where massive amounts of Rupees can be found. There's more than enough to get all the upgrades. Actually, the Blue Rupees found in the cave near the Desert of Mystery can yield infinite amounts of Rupees for you.

Faerie Pond (9/14) The pond in the pond |
Bomb the eastern wall in the pond of Happiness to locate some small faeries in the room next to it.
