New Boots from Sahasrahla
Now that you've completed this first dungeon Link can revisit old man Sahasrahla again. Enter his hiding place and talk to him. After showing him the proof to confirm that you completed the Eastern Palace the wise man tells you some thinks about the Knights which protected the assets of the Hylia.
When he's done with his short story he tells Link to go out and find a valuable item hidden to the east of Lake Hylia. This item is the Ice Rod which we already have in our inventory. If you don't, then please check the "Missing Links" section of chapter 1 you may need this weapon in the future. Next to this hint he also gives Links some new footwear.
These are the Pegasus Boots which increase Link running speed. Hold A to charge then release to start running. While he's sprinting Link will point out his sword taking out any obstacles/enemies in his path. These boots can be used to destroy the mysterious groups of 5 rocks stacked up in a square. Sometimes it reveals some hidden item or a secret passage. Check the Missing Links section of this chapter for most of these events.
Lastly, Sahasrahla has now marked both the locations of the Pendants of Power & Wisdom and the location of the Master Sword. For now you would do best to stick with the blue Pendant of Power which is hidden in the Desert Palace in the far southwestern corner of the map.
Lending the Book of Mudora
Like I said before we should be going out to the desert, then why am I not writing about the desert yet? Because Link needs a specific item before he can enter the palace there. If you try to enter the desert now as it is, Link will quickly find out that the path is blocked by a stone with a very strange writing on it.
Next to that old man Aginah who lives as a hermit in the cave to the east explains to you that it is written in ancient Hylian language. Supposedly, one would need a book to translate it...
It's called the Book of Mudora. So let's first collect this special item. The only place where there are any books is the Kakariko's library.
Enter it just one screen to the south of the actual village and notice a particular book lying high on top of the shelf. Dash into the bookshelf with the Pegasus Boots and the object will fall down on to the floor. Pick it up to 'lend' the book for free. There's no librarian or whatsoever so I suppose it's acceptable to take it just like that.
Now Link is ready to tackle the upcoming dungeon, but first he must enter it of course...
Enter the Desert of Mystery
From the Library follow the path to the southeast, until you hit a wall. Follow this wall and Link ends up in the swampy part of Hyrule. Go southwest from here and eventually he can reach out to the distant desert (peek at the map if you are lost). You're on the right track if you come across this silent patron.
He looks very suspicious, but for now leave him just like that. Continue on to the west and to reach the desert at last (unless you already went here before getting the required book). Get the Piece of Heart from Aginah's place if you like (see Missing Links section) and head over to the stone tablet to the far west. Bring out your book and it translates the text:
"To open the way to go forward,
Make your wish here
And it will be granted."
Don't forget to press a button or else Link keeps on praying for an infinite amount of time. After that the three icon statues move around and Link is granted permission into the Desert Palace by the Gods. You should have collected 7 Pieces of Heart by now and during this dungeon you can find one more raising your Life energy by one container before fighting the boss.

The 'Dashing' adventures
In Kakariko try to catch up with the scared villager using the dash. The easiest way to do so is by approach softly until your target starts running. Then quickly charge up and go for it. If you're succesfull he/she tells it must have been easy to kidnap Zelda with such quick feet...But then the villager realizes that you're not the kind of person who would do such a thing. And so you are told that dashing into objects may come provide you with some useful items.
There are so many minor hidden items in Hyrule which can be found by colliding into trees or other objects. Hence I just took some screenshots of those which you can view here. Most items you can collect are Apples which act like a recovery heart, Blue Rupee, a swarm of Bees, some Faeries, and in one occasion a Large Magic Vial. See if you can find them all (click on the thumbs to view the entire picture)!
