Once upon a rainy day

During the introduction scene you'll start with seeing our hero sleep (Why does the main protagonist always have to start out sleeping in his/her bed?). He somehow receives a telepathic message from a certain princess Zelda who is imprisoned in her own castle by the evil wizard Agahnim. She tells you to come and rescue her as quick as possible...

Telephatic message from Zelda

After her voice fades out Link's uncle is about to go and mingle around outside with his sword and shield. As Link wakes up the uncle tells him not to worry a bit while he's gone. Just after he leaves the building you gain control over Link. Tap right to get out of bed and walk around a bit. You can use Start to view your currently empty inventory and press A to lift small light objects such as pots and bushes.

Lifting Pots Finding the Magic Lamp

Mind you that the three bushes to the left of your bed conceal 3 recovery hearts, so if you ever need to regain some health you can do so here (but only once per game session). Walk to the right to open up your very first chest. This chest contains the Magic Lamp. If you had any magic power you could use it, but alas Link is completely dried out so a field test has to wait a little longer.

Speaking of fields, why not ignore your uncles commandment and leave this small cabin to save the princess in distress. There's nothing else to do here so exit this place to find yourself in outside in the rain. There are soldiers all about the place, but they are blocking your path so the only way to go from here is to the north. Speak to them if you wish to learn some of the basic commands you will need during your game.

Speaking to Soldiers

Hyrule castle infiltration

Since the only thing you can do (apart from collecting Rupees hidden under the bushes) head north to the palace grounds. The main entrance is locked according to the lone soldier here so you need to find yourself a way around this. The left branch leads to a dead end, but the path to the right looks suspicious. Lift the peculiar bush in the center of four other bushes to reveal a gaping hole.

The peculiar bush Unraveling the secret hole

Don't hesitate; be a man and go down right away. You're on a mission here! At the bottom of the pit Link finds himself in some sort of basement of the castle. Walk to the left to meet a familiar person. It's your uncle again! He speaks about Link's destiny and relinquishes his sword and shield so you can continue onwards. You feel stronger already, now your mission will become a breeze, right..?

Your uncle, his shield and the sword

Follow the path down to meet your very first adversary: a regular green soldier. Actually, there are two of them. After disposing of these wimps with two sword strikes open the chest to attain all of the soldier's wealth: a single blue Rupee (worth 5 Rupees). Lift the two pots to find some Magic Vials. Jars like these replenish your Magic power so you can now finally utilize the lamp. You can try it out on the torch to your left, although it has no use other than lightening up the place.

Oh no, Link's first hostile soldier!

Go up (walk downwards) the stairs to the south to find a passage to the castle garden. Use your sword to slash through the bushes and whack out all three guards. Enter the castle via the main entrance to reach the main hall of the palace.

Inside you can go into several directions, but most of them lead you back to this central room again. One screen up from here is the throne room. We'll need to return to this place at some point so remember it. For now take either the left or right corridor on the bottom floor to reach a passage leading down to the basement. You can wander around the upper level of this floor, but there is not much to be done here. Outside there is an electrical barrier which Link cannot yet breach.

Downstairs Link finds a blue soldier which can requires 3 strikes with your sword to defeat. Once he's gone the guy leaves his key behind. Pick it up to open one locked door in this dungeon. Coincidently, there is a locked door just to your south so use it there. Don't forget to get acquire the map from the chest.

Dungeon Map and a small key.

In the following sections there are bottomless pits so if you happen to fall down one of these you lose some health. On the other hand you can also push your enemies in these pits to make them disappear without the need to kill them, which can be very handy. Anyway, head south and follow the passage to a room which blocks off all the exits once you enter it. Kill the green soldier to unlock the doors again. Since a key is required for the northern path go right for now.

The doors are locked!

Collecting the Boomerang

In this room a single blue soldier is guarding a key in his possession and a chest with this dungeon's item inside. After defeating him open the treasure chest to receive the Boomerang. You can use this item just like the Magic Lamp to immobilize enemies for a moment.

B3F

Retrieve your steps to the locked door, head north, down the stairs twice and defeat the lone green soldier near the prison cells. To the right there is your very first mini-boss: Ball 'n Chain Trooper (sometimes referred to as Iron Ball Soldier). To defeat him carefully hit him with the sword without getting hit by the swinging ball or alternatively throw some pots at him from a safe distance. Either way you should be victorious without too much of a hassle. I found out that it is even easier to beat him using the boomerang. Just walk up to him right away, deploy the boomerang and keep on hitting him with the sword.

The great escape

After 8 strikes he should go down leaving a large key with horns. This is the Big key which can open up many locks which small keys cannot such as Zelda's prison. Do so right now to get the chest with another blue rupee (you got to make the right priorities). Afterwards talk to Zelda and she tells you the way to escape from the palace. From this moment on she'll follow you anywhere you go.

Zelda is freed!

2F

As I told you before to remember Link needs to return to the throne room so go there now. There's no need to take out all the soldier, just evade them to get back quicker. Upon approaching the king's throne Zelda tells you to push the ornamental shelf to find a hidden passage behind it.

The peculiar shelf You found a way out!

In the following corridors it is very dark so you may want to use the Magic Lamp on the torches to light up the room. This may help you navigate through it. Follow the path and gp down the stairs twice. Beware of the tight passage with several snakes which are called: "Rope" in this game.

B1F

In the next room open the chest to the right to claim a small key and use it to unlock the door to the north (I thought the Big Key could open it up...). After some more rooms you'll find an locked door and no chest nearby. To get past this door you need to defeat the rats here, because one of them has the key in its possession.

Rat has the key

In the room hereafter there is a cracked wall and if you strike your sword against it, it will make a distinct sound. This wall is breakable, but you do not have the means to do so. If you really want the treasure behind it you need to collect some bombs first to blow this section up. This calls for backtracking later on! Hence push the center block up at the top to reach the stairway.

1F

Take out the rats hereafter and head down to reach a room with two levers, one on each side of the room. Check out the pictures below to see the results of pulling the each lever.

The left lever -> 8 ropes... The right lever -> opens exit!

Upon going through this passage you enter the Sanctuary via the back door. After listening to Zelda's story again you need to head out to find the Elder. His house has now been marked on the map to make your travels a bit easier.

Entering the sanctuary in reverse.

You may have noticed the chest to the left of the Sanctuary's guardian. Open it to receive your very first Heart Container! Now you have more life than before, which allows you to endure more damage. Normally when beating a palace you receive a full Heart container, but there are also Pieces of Heart spread throughout the world. If you manage to collect four of them you'll gain a Heart container as well.

Link gets a (hopefully non-beating) heart!

Exit the shrine via the doorway to get outside again. Consult your map and you may wish to go to Kakariko Village (marked by the cross), or explore more of the kingdom of Hyrule in the other directions.
