Link headed east across Ukuku Prairie, looking for Yarna Desert, and on the way he found Tarin by a tree, a tree that was home to a beehive. Tarin asked to borrow the stick Link had gotten from the monkeys, and foolishly hit the beehive out of the tree to get its honeycomb. The angry bees chased away Tarin, and Link picked up the honeycomb that was left behind and continued on his merry way.
Link eventually reached Animal Village, a strange town filled with talking animals. He stopped by one of the houses and asked the owner, a rabbit, how he could reach Yarna Desert. The rabbit told him that there was a way to get there to the south, but he couldn't get there if the lazy walrus was blocking the way. Another rabbit told him that the Mabe and Animal villages were sister cities, and that a good source told him there was something good inside the Dream Shrine in Mabe.
Link checked the south entrance to the desert, and, sure enough, a huge walrus was asleep right in Link's path. He went back to Animal Village, and inside one of the houses he met a bear chef. This bear had just ran out of honeycomb, and traded a pineapple for the honeycomb Link had picked up. The bear told Link that the walrus wouldn't move for a long time, unless someone could get Marin to sing for it. The bear assured him that "Little Marin" could make the walrus jump for sure!
It was clear to Link that he would have to travel all the way back to Mabe Village to pick up Marin. But outside the village, Link found a warp hole that took him back to Ukuku Prairie, just outside Mabe. Marin and Tarin's house was empty, and Link found a note on the table saying that Marin was at the beach. Before he went searching for Marin, Link stopped by the Dream Shrine in the north of Mabe, and saw that there was a bed inside. He was tired, so he decided to take a short nap. He dreamt of a strange place where creatures mimicked his every move, where he had to mow them down using the Pegasus Boots to charge them. At the top of a spiraling platform Link opened a treasure chest and obtained the Ocarina. Link didn't know how to play this instrument, but he would learn soon enough. Strangely enough, when he exited the Shrine he woke up and was already out of bed. Although it had been a dream, it had really happened: Link still had the Ocarina with him. Could dreams really manifest themselves in reality? Had he really been dreaming?
Refreshed, but a little confused, Link searched the Toronbo Shores, and finally found Marin in an isolated place. Marin was glad that Link had found this place, and wanted him to stay and talk with her a while. She talked about herself while they stared out over the waters, and Link listened quietly.
I
wonder where these coconut trees came from?
Tarin says there is nothing beyond the sea, but I believe there must be something over there...
When I discovered you, Link, my heart skipped a beat! I thought, this person has come to give us
a message...
If I was a sea gull, I would fly as far as I could! I would fly to far away places and sing for many people! If I wish to the Wind Fish, I wonder if my dream will come true... I want to know everything about you... | ![]() |
At this point Marin grew embarrassed and laughed. Link told her about the walrus, and Marin said that she would accompany Link to Animal Village. They went through the warp hole, and when they walked into Animal Village everyone was overjoyed to see their "Little Marin." They stood in front of the walrus, and Marin sang her 'Ballad of the Wind Fish.' The walrus woke with a start and, while jumping around, fell into the river nearby. A rabbit, hearing the song, came to Marin and asked her to sing to them like she had always done. Before she left Marin asked Link to drop by the Animal Village and visit her.
Link went back to Animal Village to see Marin, and he spotted her singing in a large field, surrounded by animals. She was singing her 'Ballad of the Wind Fish,' and the animals were completely absorbed in the song. Spying Link, Marin greeted him and told him that she often came to Animal Village to sing, and that nearly everyone loved to hear this song. Link stayed and listened to her sing for a while, but Marin stopped suddenly when she noticed that Link had a nice Ocarina. She asked Link to accompany her, and since Link had been practicing, he obliged her. Link agreed with Marin that the song was very touching, and Link knew that it would remain in his heart always. Before Link left for the desert, Marin told him to never forget this song... or her...
