The next maiden was being held in the Ice Palace in the southeast of the Dark World. Link knew that this somehow corresponded to Lake Hylia in southeastern Hyrule, and began to journey there. As he walked along he played the flute again, and suddenly noticed the bird flying above his head. It swooped down and, grabbing Link by the collar, flew Link to wherever in Hyrule he wanted to go.

The bird dropped him off by Lake Hylia, and Link jumped in and swam towards an island in the middle. On the island was a heavy stone, and lifting it with the Titan's Mitt, Link exposed another portal to the Dark World. Link stepped in and appeared in the Dark World, near the entrance to the Ice Palace. The whole area around the Ice Palace, instead of being a lake, was instead an enemy-infested, icy wasteland.

Inside the Ice Palace Link slipped and slid on icy floors while using the Fire Rod to destroy frozen demons. Groups of green penguins slid on their stomachs to attack him, but he fought them off. Link kept exploring, meanwhile going deeper and deeper downward into the heart of the Ice Palace. A large treasure chest contained the Blue Mail, armor which increased Link's defense. Huge Stalfos Knights seemed impossible to defeat, but Link discovered that after they collapsed they were vulnerable to bombs.

In the heart of the Ice Palace Link found Kholdstare, three gelatinous blobs frozen inside enchanted ice. Dodging blocks of ice that fell from the ceiling, Link shot fireball after fireball at the monster with his Fire Rod. Link feared that he would run out of magic power, but fortunately, with Link's last blast of fire, Kholdstare's icy spell was dispelled. The exposed blobs moved around the frozen cavern, and Link slashed at them with the tempered Master Sword until they were destroyed.

Link touched the blue crystal that dropped to the floor, and the fifth kidnapped maiden told him:

They say the Hylia people controlled mysterious powers, as did the seven sages. But the blood of the Hylia has become thin over time. We who carry the blood of the sages do not possess strong power any more, either. Our powers will increase if we mix the courage of the Knights with the wisdom of the wise men. Only a short time remains until the gate at the castle linking the worlds opens completely. If you defeat Ganon, this world will vanish and the Triforce will wait for a new holder. I believe in you...
