Link was transported back to the Village of Outcasts, and he walked around for a while. In the southern section of the village Link saw a frog trapped by some heavy stones. Using the Titan's Mitt, Link lifted these stones easily, freeing the frog-creature. The frog was really a Blacksmith in the Light World, and he requested that Link take him back to his partner. Link agreed, and taking out the Magic Mirror, the two were transported back to the Light World. In a puff of smoke the frog turned back into a dwarf, and Link took him to the Blacksmith Shop in eastern Kakariko. In return for saving him, the Blacksmiths promised to temper Link's sword.
While the dwarven blacksmiths tempered the Master Sword, Link went to the Kakariko Village pub for some rest and relaxation. When he walked in, he saw an old man sitting on a mat, mumbling in his sleep. He was saying something about his flute-playing son who had gone to look for the Golden Power but hadn't returned. The old man wondered what his son was doing now. Link wanted to help the man, but he didn't know where to start. He went back to the Blacksmith's Shop and picked up his tempered sword, which now glowed like fire, and headed out. He was wandering in the Haunted Grove southeast of Kakariko when he heard a flute. Following the sound, he found a young boy standing on a stump, surrounded by forest animals. When Link tried to get close, the animals ran away and the boy faded into nothingness.
Link knew that the flute boy must be trapped in the Dark World, so using the nearest portal he went to the Dark World. Traveling to the same grove of trees, Link found a strange creature standing on the stump. The creature told him that he had changed into this shape after wandering into this world. He had enjoyed playing the flute in the original world, and remembered a small grove where many animals gathered. He wanted to see that place again. Telling Link that he had buried his flute in that grove along with some flower seeds, he asked Link to find the flute for him. Link agreed, and the creature lent him his shovel.
Using the Magic Mirror, Link warped to the Haunted Grove, and dug up flower after flower looking for the flute. At last he found it, and he stepped back into the portal. The creature thanked Link, but since he couldn't play the flute anymore he told Link to keep it, and to take it to the tired old man in the village where he had once lived. The creature's mind was getting hazy, and he asked Link to let him hear the sound of the flute one last time. Putting the flute to his lips, Link played the same melody he had heard the flute boy's ghost play in the Light World. The creature appeared blissful, and slowly turned into a small tree.
Link returned to the old man in Kakariko Village and tried to wake him up, but he was sleeping too deeply. The old man awakened with a start when Link played the flute, and asked Link if his son was all right. Before Link could say anything, the man knew the answer. He could read it in Link's eyes. He asked Link to keep the flute, and to play the sweet melody for the bird in the village square. Link went to the village square, but saw only a statue of a bird. He played the flute boy's melody anyway, and a white bird popped out of the statue and flew away.
