Link Saves a Maiden from the Dark Palace

Link's vision faded, and soon he was standing in the Dark World once again. This time he stood where Hyrule Castle should have been: on top of a giant golden pyramid, the Pyramid of Power. From this vantage point Link could see the vast expanse of the Dark World. He saw a tall tower on the mountain far to the north, and saw statues of Agahnim surrounding the pyramid. Suddenly, Link heard a voice in his mind:

Link, it is I, Sahasrahla. I am communicating to you across the void through telepathy. The place where you now stand was the Golden Land, but evil power turned it into the Dark World. The wizard has broken the sages' seal and opened a gate to link the worlds at Hyrule Castle. In order to save this half of the world, the Light World, you must win back the Golden Power. You must also rescue the seven maidens who Agahnim sent to the Dark World. As members of the blood-line of the seven sages, they have power that will surely help you. The maidens are locked in hidden dungeons full of evil creatures and dangerous traps. The Palace of Darkness should be your first goal in this world! Link, I can rely on only you. Please make this old man's wishes come true. I beg you!

Link now knew his quest, and climbed down from the Pyramid of Power. Upon reaching the ground, Link faced Ganon's mutated army: Hinox, bomb-throwing cyclops; Moblins, pig-faced warriors; Snap Dragons, the result of a mad alchemist's plant experiments; and more.

Hinox and Snap Dragon

Following Sahasrahla's directions, Link headed east to where the Eastern Palace should have been in the Light World. What he found instead was a complex maze of plants and stone. In the middle he saw a large building, and worked his way towards it. This was not the Palace of Darkness, but instead the dwelling place of a small tree. Suddenly the tree opened its eyes and spoke:

You're new here, aren't you? Did you come here looking for the Power of Gold? Well, you're too late. It will obey only the first person who touches it. The man who last claimed the Power of Gold wished for this world. It reflects his heart. Yes, I came here because of greed for the Golden Power, and look what happened to me. To restore the Golden Land, a person worthy of the Golden Power must defeat the man who created this place. Until that time, I am stuck in this bizarre shape. But what a mischievous thing to leave lying around... The Power of Gold... Triforce...

Link continued to search the maze, until he noticed that a little blue monkey was following him. The monkey introduced himself as Kiki, and asked for some Rupees. Link needed a guide, and had plenty of Rupees to spare, so he gave the little chimp some. The monkey followed Link around as he searched, but didn't help him find the Palace. When Link finally found the Dark Palace, the entrance was shut. Suddenly the monkey spoke up, and offered to open the entrance for 100 Rupees. Link thought the price was a little steep, but he didn't see any other way into the Palace, and gave him the money. Kiki jumped up on Link's shoulders, and from there onto a nearby statue, and from there onto the roof of the Palace. He stomped on a switch that Link hadn't noticed, and the entrance slowly opened.

Helmasaur The creatures in this Palace were tougher than anything Link had faced before. Helmasaurs wore a shield on their face, so he could only injure them from behind. Floating jellyfish threatened to shock him. Crawling turtles resisted his every blow. When Link found the Magic Hammer hiding inside of a chest, he put it to good use, slamming the turtles on their backs and slashing at their underbellies. Once he heard Zelda contacting him telepathically. She told him she was locked in Turtle Rock on top of Death Mountain, and asked him to hurry. When he reached the lair of the Palace's guardian, Link faced the biggest Helmasaur he had yet seen. He had to use bombs and the Magic Hammer to knock its mask off, while dodging its wildly swinging tail. With the mask broken off, the monster's single crystal eye was exposed, and Link shot arrows at it. With one final roar, the monster was destroyed.

Helmasaur King

A shimmering blue crystal dropped to the floor, and Link picked it up. The image of one of the kidnapped maidens appeared to him, and said:

This world used to be the Golden Land where the Triforce was hidden. But because Ganon, the boss of thieves, wished it the world was transformed. I'm sure he's intending to conquer even our Light World after building up his power here. He is trying to open a larger gate between the worlds near the castle using our powers. But the gate is not open completely yet... If we seven maidens come together, we can break the barrier around Ganon's hiding place. I will tell you where the other girls are held. I believe you will destroy Ganon. I will return to my original form at that time.
