The Life Forms of Hyrule

Farore created many intelligent creatures to uphold the law.

The Hylia - Legends say that the Hylia were the chosen people of the goddesses. With their magic infused blood, the Hylian people were endowed with psychic powers and skill in wizardry. It is said that their long, pointed ears enable them to hear special messages from the goddesses, so they are held in high esteem by many people in Hyrule. Their descendants settled in various parts of the world and passed on their knowledge and magical lore to all people. The Hylian Royal Family, for many centuries, ruled their own kingdom of Hyrule, and many Hylians lived as Sages, devoting themselves to knowledge and the study of the Triforce.

The Sheikah - Known as the "Shadow Folk" in legends, the Sheikah swore allegiance to the King of Hyrule and guarded the Royal Family as attendants. They founded Kakariko Village as a town that would serve the King. They set up a network of Gossip Stones to spy on their enemies, and were skilled at disappearing in a flash. After the fierce wars their numbers declined, but for generations afterward the descendants of Impa, a legendary Sheikah, still protected the descendants of Princess Zelda.

The Kokiri - These childlike people lived in the Kokiri Forest in the Lost Woods, where the Great Deku Tree protected them from outside forces. The Kokiri are children their whole lives. Each Kokiri has a guardian fairy. They are superstitious, believing they will die if they leave the protection of the forest.

The Gerudo - The Gerudo thieves hail from the desert beyond Zora's River in southern Hyrule. The Gerudo are all female, but every hundred years a male is born and by law becomes King. In Gerudo society, those who have great skill in horseback riding and archery are well respected. Most Gerudos have no respect for any male besides their King, who they worship like a god, but it is said that Gerudos sometimes used to come to Hyrule Castle Town to look for boyfriends.

The Zora - This proud species populates the great waterways of Hyrule. They are like advanced fish, and although they can venture out of the water for short periods of time, they prefer to live underwater. There are two types of Zoras: ocean-dwellers and river-dwellers. The ocean Zoras of Zora's Domain were longtime allies of the Royal Family, protecting the source of Hyrule's water in the name of the King of Hyrule. Most river Zoras are hostile to outsiders.

The Gorons - These big, rock-eating creatures live in mountains, harvesting tasty rocks. Gorons are very strong, and can roll into a ball to protect themselves or to travel by rolling. Some Gorons will grow into giants if given enough time. Some Gorons are known for their smithying skill.

The Deku Scrubs - These small, nosy creatures are like moving plants. They are wooden and sprout leaves, but can move around and spit seeds. Many live underground in special Deku flowers. Some will do business with strangers, while others will attack on first sight.

The Tokay - Tokay are like big lizard men. They are clever, but also tend to be thieves.

The Subrosians - These mysterious robed people can be found in the underground land of Subrosia. They enjoy lava baths and dancing, and value ore chunks over rupees. They rarely venture to the outside world, and so are sometimes clueless about the overworld.
