This is a table comparing the Japanese and English texts of A Link to the Past for the SNES. The table is based on the work originally done by KWhazit on his web site. Please go there to see the original translation, which may have changed since I converted it to this table.

This table follows the same format and organization as my ALttP Quote FAQ. The Japanese quotes were typed by KWhazit, and the literal translation is also done by KWhazit. The English NOA quotes are from my quote FAQ, which in turn came from my text dump. KWhazit uses an asterisk (*) to indicate when he is not confident of his translation. The comments are color-coded to indicate who wrote the comment (see the key below).

KWhazit and I would both like more Japanese-speaking Zelda fans to look over this table, check the translation, and make more comments. Please let me know if you are interested.

Ending adjectives with -き, as 美しき here, is from an older form of Japanese. It's probably used here to make the narrative sound ancient. Throughout this speech, sentences end with things like と言うことです and そうです to indicate that the speaker did not witness these events firsthand, but heard them from another source.
ここに、封印をとこうとたくらむ、ナゾの司祭アグニムがいました。彼は国王をほうむり…。	Here, there was the mysterious priest Aghanim, who plotted to dissolve the seal. He got the king out of his way, and...	A mysterious wizard known as Agahnim came to Hyrule to release the seal. He eliminated the good King of Hyrule...	The story is a bit ambiguous about what happened to the king. ほうむる can mean burying the dead, but can also mean making something not come out in the open. So he could be dead, but all that's certain is that he's where he can't get in the way. アグニム is closer to Agunim than to Agahnim.
城の兵達をあやつって７賢者の血をひく娘達を、つぎつぎイケニエにささげていったのです。	Manipulating the castle's soldiers, he offered as sacrifices maidens descended from the Seven Sages, one after another. And the time of destiny for Princess Zelda is drawing near.	The term for princess here (王女) specifically means royalty. Elsewhere, the game uses a respectful suffix that can apply to any young woman of the nobility (姫) and is probably closer to "Lady" than "Princess".

There is a secret passage in the throne room that leads to Sanctuary. I'm sure the old man there will help us.	This is a different term for "priest" than the one used for Aghanim. These kanji mean, approxinately, "holy father", while Aghanim's mean "ritual director", but both mean 'priest'.

He's hiding in the palace past the castle. I will mark the spot on your map. Here you are...	おじいちゃん (ojiichan) can mean grandfather, but is also a familiar way of referring to an old man. And おにいちゃん (onii-chan) can mean big brother, but is also a familiar way of referring to a slightly older male.

Of Course!	子孫 (しそん, shison) means descendant, posterity, or offspring. Note its relationship to 一族 (ichizoku), which means family or household. This word is used to describe the family of sages, the family of Knights, the Goron people, etc. In OoT Ganondorf uses this word when he says he will exterminate everyones' descendants. He's actually promising to wipe out their respective families. So descendant, in this context, seems to mean a literal blood relation within a family. Which makes it difficult to explain how the sages all became Hylian. The whole issue is still open to interpretation. Notice how Sahasrahla specified here that the Hero has to defeat three monsters as well. In the American version, he only specifies this in the alternate version of this quote (if you talk to him only after beating the Eastern Temple; see below.)

I want you to have it.	魔族 means something like 'demon clan' or 'magic race'. 昔 (mukashi) translates to "olden days," "antiquity," "once upon a time." NOA's translation (3 or 4 generations) is much too specific, and implies a time lapse that is perhaps far too short. The GBA version of ALttP changed this to "generations ago," which could be longer but still doesn't seem to convey the original sense of "ancient times." The knights are not called the "Knights of Hyrule" in the original. They are simply called the family of Knights.

The "j" is soft, unlike the implied hard "g" in "Aginah." The prohecy was originally made by the seven sages, and passed down by the Hylians. The original implies that there is more to the prophecy; he's just telling part of it. The NOA version implies that he's telling the WHOLE prophecy.

It's not clear if this means they sealed portals from the Dark World to the Light World, or vice versa, but the former is more likely. Notice how "sacrifice" changed to "kidnapping."

This must be how the Gorons got their name in OoT, since they -roll- around..

The Master Sword he will then retrieve, Keeping the Knight's line true.	The NOA translation is "Cataclysm's Eve," which might lead one to think that the Cataclysm hasn't happened yet. The original Japanese, however, seems to imply that the hero will arrive when the Cataclysm has already begun, when it's just getting started.

This country's fate rests with you. I'm counting on you, Link. ...	Suddenly, Sahasrahla contacts you telepathically... ... ... ... Link, it is extraordinary that you won the Master Sword that makes evil retreat... With this shining sword, I believe you can deflect the wizard's evil powers. The destiny of this land is in your hands. Please, Link...	The NOA translation leaves out the part where Sahasrahla says that the shining of the sword is actually Link's power. I'm unclear on whether this means the power comes from Link himself, or whether it's the sword's power that now belongs to him because he has claimed the sword, but either way, the point stands. Since he needs to be at full power to use the sword to its fullest (fire energy bolts), I'm leaning toward it coming from Link himself.

English doesn't gave a good transitive equivalent, but both 'get rid of' and 'make vanish' are close.

He is more general in the original version, saying that all greedy people became monsters, not just himself. 先住の民 (senjuu no tami), translated as "the people/nation that came/dwelt before," is kind of ambiguous in this context. It might refer to the gods themselves, or it might refer to the Hylian nation from ancient times. The NOA translation doesn't say who it was who left the Triforce behind, so we're led to believe that it was the gods. But he could be referring to the Hylians, who allegedly did not hide the Triforce well enough.

The style of this last line feels a bit different to me from the rest of the conversation, so between that and the fact that every one of the maidens says exactly the same line, I'm guessing that it's supposed to be a traditional prayer or blessing.

NOA seems to have been de-emphasizing the Hero's special connection to these items.

The original says that the maidens were no longer of use, while the NOA version does not. By Ganon not knowing about Link, I think she means that he didn't realize Link's signifigance, not that he didn't know Link existed (though that's also possible).

The verb used for his attempted passage to the Light World has a nuance of escaping, and the problem if Ganon enters the Light World seems to be more one of 'catching' him than beating him. From reading the NOA version, it might be confusing why the Dark World is a "closed space." From the original version, it is clearer that the Dark World is "bound," meaning that the Sages' Seal limits where Ganon can go.

It implies that Ganon and Agahnim were the same thing in a way. For example, bunshin is used in OoT to describe one of the Poe bosses in the Forest Temple: "Meg - one of the Poe sisters. If she splits into multiple images, you need to figure out which one is the real one." So Agahnim is kind of like a copy or shadow of Ganon. ぶんしん doesn't translate well, partly because it's rather vague to start with.
